I don’t know about you but the beginning of this 2019 year has been a bit challenging. I had some health issues that really took the wind out of my sails. But I am definitely back on track and the high energies that this year has in store for us, has my head spinning in a good way though! I bet a lot of you are feeling the same way. If we’re not careful, we may find ourselves breathing very shallow or even holding our breath. So for those of you who are finding the stress of everyday living causing you to be short of breath, I am sharing today The Complete Yogic Breathe. I was taught this technique when I began my yoga practice with Lex Gillian, founder of the Yoga Institute back in 1974.
THE COMPLETE YOGIC BREATHE
The majority of the people (about 85%) do not breathe correctly causing an extreme amount of stress in their lives. Unless you are a person that sings professionally or plays a wind instrument like the trumpet, most of us only use about 1/3 capacity of our lungs when we breathe. Not getting enough oxygen into the system can cause lots of problems, physically, mentally and emotionally.
A baby comes into this world breathing the Complete Yogic Breathe. At around 4 or 5 years the child’s breathing reverses due to stress even at that young of an age. We must all learn to breathe correctly again.
When breathing the Complete Yogic Breathe, we start at the belly. When we inhale the belly rises, then it moves into the ribs and then up into the chest and on the exhale the belly falls, the ribs contract, and the chest falls. The breath becomes like a wave.
When we breathe it is important that the breath is fluid and consistent. So the out breathe should be as long and deep as the in breathe. The best way to practice is to count the length of the in breathe and out breathe. Each count is about 1 second. It is best to start with a 4 count in and 4 count out and move up as the breath becomes easier.
Starting a meditation practice is very important in keeping our body and mind in harmony. To sit without movement is an art and should be practiced daily. As you sit in meditation whether it is for 2, 5 or 10 minutes, practice the Complete Yogic Breathe at the same time. This will help keep the mind focused and you will find that you can meditate longer.
